at the end of volume 2, No. 4 attacks No. 5, so volume 3 starts off with No. 5 and Matroska stuck in No. 4's world of nonsensical visions and flashbacks that constantly repeat itself in hopes that No. 5 will give up his ways and come back to the rainbow council. Meanwhile Viktor (a former Rainbow member and No. 5's former boss) was sent by Papa(he no longer trust No. 1 and the others to do it) to assassinate No. 5 before things got any worse.

Of course Viktor being the evil bastard he is on-purposely misses No. 5 and kills a civilian in hopes of making the situation worse. Of course Viktor's actions really pisses off No. 4 so he/they attempt to fuck with him by doing to him what he's doing to No. 5, throwing him into a random and constantly changing world. But Viktor very well aware that No. 4's powers are just illusions and none of it is real. No. 4 realizing that they don't have much time before Viktor reaches them he/they meet up with 5, this is where they tell him that they will soon be killed by Viktor and that it's their dying wish is to have 5 join the Rainbow Council again and protect No. 1 who's destined to save the world. So eventually 4 convinces 5 and then that's when Viktor shoots the three of them and takes Matroska.

So because of the death of the civilian and the rainbow councils botched attempt to stop 5, the government/military officials disbanded the rainbow council.

tl;dr: 4 puts 5 in a dream world so he can try to fix him, but viktor comes and crashes the party.

I tracked this series down because I think Matsumoto is beyond genius. I got really scared 'cause I thought this thread hadn't been updated in like 5 months. turns out I was on the wrong thread! Ahh newb mistake. Great to see this thread has been updated fairly recently. Matsumoto's works really need to get out in the public as much as possible. Work like his must be spread to prove the legitimacy of manga/comics as an art form. Thanks for scanlating such brilliant stories!

I hope Sig Ikki pulls shit together and makes a real OVA out of Five (and Doro). Rideback was a fail, but this could be better. Definitely better than the Moe Cancer that calls itself anime these days...

I was about to say that the only studio that could do something like this, considering the source material and the result, would be Studio 4°C.

Guess what, this Matsumoto add (btw, it was made in 2003) that you showed us was made by Kamikaze Douga, a little indie studio created by (oh surprise) Syuhei Morita and Daisuke Sajiki, two persons who worked at Studio 4°C. Almost everything that comes out of this studio is pure win.

Anyway, everytime there is a good manga such as No.5 (or Doro), the lack of anime adaptation is a good thing imo. At least that way we're not disappointed.

Very exciting that you guys are moving forward on No. 5, thanks a lot. Matsumoto can be a bit of an acquired taste, but he's got such a range of styles that I feel like some part of his work should be accessible to everyone --- the comparisons to Moebius for this manga are spot on, for example. If anyone's enjoying this and wants to try some even more unusual work of his, I very, very strongly recommend Takemitsu Zamurai, which is drawn in a sort of manga-adapted Floating World style that's just beautiful. It takes him a few chapters to work out exactly how he wants to draw it, but man ... once he gets going it's unbelievable.
