Several hundred years ago, humans were nearly exterminated by giants. Giants are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for the pleasure rather than as a food source. A small percentage of humanity survived by walling themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls, even taller than the biggest of giants.

Flash forward to the present and the city has not seen a giant in over 100 years. Teenage boy Elen and his foster sister Mikasa witness something horrific as the city walls are destroyed by a super giant that appears out of thin air. As the smaller giants flood the city, the two kids watch in horror as their mother is eaten alive. Elen vows that he will murder every single giant and take revenge for all of mankind.

After some weeks i finally read this volume.

For those who are wondering, the numbers 845 and 850 represent years. It's the timeline of the story. So Ehren (I decided to take liberties and call the main character with this German word for 'honors') went into military training for 5 years.

Actually there's a slight chance that "Ehren" is what the author meant, but the kana reading doesn't quite match the word's pronunciation.

Haha, I was also sleepy when I read the first volume but a few pages into the action and I started getting addicted. The art may is sketchy and I like it actually, because it reminds me of my own drawings.

at the moment, but we all know how an artist's art evolves over time, just look at one piece, kenichi, or the breaker

I felt the art was reminiscent of Hitoshi Iwaaki who did Parasite/Kiseijuu , and that the deceptively rough style works well for fast paced action drawn from difficult perspectives of scale..
I'm not sure but the Breaker looked like at some points they must have used computer aided 3D compositional tools (sort of like Gantz) to map out certain scenes,either that or some serious architechtural draughtsmans skills...

it's understandable that SJ rejected this. not only it doesn't fit SJ style, but the author also seems to lack experience in visual storytelling.
All the anatomical and perspective errors aside, pictures just don't flow as they should. i don't think it's an effect of some deliberate pacing, author just doesn't seem to get what shots and angles to use in which situations etc.

Anyway, i bet it would become a much less interesting manga if it got serialized in shonen jump.

The way it is now, despite its flaws it's certainly worth reading.
though the last twist made me fear that protagonist's gonna get a lame deus ex machina with awakening of some shonenesque Hidden Power (tm). which will allow him to fight giants on equal level.

Well, it was implied his father did something to him during his childhood hence his glimpse of memory fragments and the dream where he waked up crying(i guess)...that or he will indeed die and his sister will become the main character in the next volume.

Fuckyeah! That'd be great! However, I don't dislike the idea of Eren dying and Mikasa taking the main role in the series... this would be pretty original
