Perfect Dark is a new file sharing program in Japan and possibly the successor to Share and Winny.

1) Download Perfect Dark version 0.992
Starting with version 0.992 Perfect Dark uses an English interface.

<a href="http://www.hiderefer.com/?http://www.divshare.com/download/3438184-093" target="_blank" class="aeva_link bbc_link new_win">http://www.divshare.com/download/3438184-093</a>

2.1) Start "perfect dark.exe"

3) Configuration

Create a nickname

4) Go to http://www.hayasoft.com/syumi/dark/ and copy the nodes. It should look like this

5) Navigation

IMPORTANT:
"perfect dark is offline" indicates that it's offline.
"perfect dark is online" in BLUE LETTERS: normal mode.
"perfect dark is online" in RED LETTERS indicates that it can't open the port.
*Try Port: 25975 if you have port problems.

6) Adding Files

7) Rating Files

In order to rate a file and to give it a postive or negative feedback, click on the ?? tab. Right-click a file and choose
(G) for high-quality
(N) for average
(B) for fake/mislabeled/virus-infected
Everyone's feedback translates into a positive or negative integer in the ?? column on the search and download tabs.

8) Other Perfect Dark Tutorials

You can run Perfect Dark without 20 GB but the longer you use it, the bigger becomes the cache folder.

1) Minimum is still 20 GB but as long as you delete your cache folder regularly you can run it below 20 GB.
2) Red status means it got port problems.

Why is that? because of the 20gig cache? its like it takes it all cache builds up over time.
And like sliver siad. if you delete it once in a while it wont take up space.

well I had to make a static IP so I could directly tell my router to open that particular port~ otherwise it didnt work. So might try that :)

To open the port for download programs, first make sure what the port is and then go to your router's site. On the router's site you add the port and BAM, you can download at ease. I had to do that with alot of programs because ROUTERS ARE THE BIGGEST PAIN EVER!

yes thats what i thought of doing but since my ip changes so much even in my own home it would be pointless settting the port open for the pacific ip.

I don't have a static IP and I inserted the port. I did that and never had to do it again.

I can't tell you where the router's homepage is since every company's router has different homepage for it. it's not even a internet site, it's like YOUR router's site or something. So everything there is only related to settings of your router. I asked my friends help when inserting ports. They knew alot.

If I could access the page then I would probably read down the ports I've added but I forgot the road. I think I had to take my IP and put it to my firefox or something but I forgot how. But I've some random ports too like the ones that might be a bit wrong for something or the ones for games. Not too many ports probably. Around 10 or less.

if you write ipconfig in the dosconsole it should give you the ip you need to acces to the router
usually 192.168.1.1 or something like that

the nodes need to be actualized often?

Node list is just a collection of starter connection addresses. The node list will grow and change depending upon your search and the results that the Perfect Dark gets. Unless you have not used the program for ages, it is not required to re-input any nodes. Same goes with winny and share.
BTW here is a PDF file of the setup guide.
http://members.shaw.ca/aw-sp/PD/Perfect_Dark_-_Setup_Guide.pdf

the GUI translation stuff will come later.

Hello there!, I'm new to the site although i've been coming here to check it often.
I'm currently using Share and Perfect Dark, and i have to say they are awsome.

However, i've been noticing that the Unity folder in Perfect Dark keeps growing and growing,
even if i'm not downloading anything at all. Is there a way to stop that or to minimize its growth?
And can some one explain the ????FLOW)?box. I see a lot of messages going thru there so i
can only imagine it could be some IRC board implementation i suppose, but you guys let me know.

Thanks for all~!

PD saves its cache in the unity folder. You can delete the content of the unity folder, but all incomplete downloads will also be deleted, otherwise it will grow to 20 GB (minimum cache size). I don't know which flow box you mean.

Thanks for the reply Silverado.
So basically the unity folder is the cache right?
I erased the files in the unity folder, and it went pretty good, but i kept having messages about the unity
growing up, i suppose Perfect Dark checks the unity folder periodically for any changes, and fiixes them
if it finds them.

And as of the "FLOW" box, here's a screen shot:

My only guess is that it must be some type of message board, where people post relevant messages,
like updates or the posting of new files, or just post crap.
But let me know what you think.

Also notice the new version update!!!
It was 0.910 but now it's 0.911, it keeps updating, i hope they can add the "BOARD" support this time around.

Okay guys... Massive discovery.

As I posited, Perfect Dark can be resource hacked resource hacked rather easily. (I used XN Resource Editor on perfect dark.exe)

Things I was able to change.

Apparently, most of the menus are natively English without any tweaking in the resource editor and appear in Japanese only when PD is loaded.

I wonder why...

Flow is exactly what you said. A place to put up requests, messages to those who use PD, or comments on things you found. How to throw comments in is on the button right of the Flow button. A new window with editable text box will appear. Enter in any comment you like then press OK

The thing is, if I make even a single change, PD will refuse to start. I've tried this with 0.880 and 0.920...

This is because the translation is taken from the Info_Line. If you look carefully on 109 there are the english lines and the japanese line with specific id numbers.  I can't edit these through my rebuilder...

What do you suggest short of decompiling and doing hex/text edits and then recompiling?

Roomer says that Perfect Dark failed to be accepted at large... I'm not sure if they are considering reworking the program or trashing the project.

Huh, it seems that latest version(9.30) is also last.. Or does it?

Because in searches I see just files that _I'm originally sharing_ and Perfect Dark keeps having port problems/being offline...
And in "main search" it shows just small list.

Thanks, silverado.

But, I'm thinking that PD suffers from something called "CPU hogging". It slows my computer insanely, jamming browser and all. I must restart it about each fifteen minutes, even it wasn't connected at all...

I got this message, when I open Perfect Dark 0.940

I wonder is that critical or something? Because I haven't been able to download anything, even there reads "perfect dark is online". Could somebody translate that for me? Or tell meaning of it?

it's not a warning ... it says that cache will automatically be downloaded until 2000 MB and download will be easier if unity (cache) is greater than 2000.
It also says that to help the network please don't delete the files in the unity folder.

my question .. I did everything. mine says I'm online. I can search everything but I just can't download.
when I click on the searches and they go to the download screen, they just stay there and stop at 0%.
I've tried this with files that have 100+ counts and good green reviews on the left.
Why is this?

I'm not entirely sure how to search in Perfect Dark. Are there clusters and/or triggers? Are you supposed to first search for a category and then the file you want within that category so it branches? Or do you just search for the file you want and leave it there even if it initially returns 0 results? Does it continually search for it if you don't remove the query?

Add some files to share and be patient. You need a broadband connection (50+ KB/s upload) in order to use perfect dark.

You can try to use a new version of perfect dark. It looks like you're connected to only very few nodes. Since you got no download or upload.

I've been getting the "unity" 2000 mb popup as above, hasn't happened before. Since it started happening, I haven't downloaded a bit of anything. 0% on all downloads. I have left it on for several days before (this has been happening about a month) and lately I left it on all week. Still 0% on anything. Something is wrong. Sure that "unity" 2000 mb message doesn't mean anything? My unity file is set to like 40 gigs. . .

Ended up reinstalling windows, thus wiping my hard drive. So, I reinstalled Perfect Dark. And it won't connect. I went through the setup procedure just like last time but now it just says "perfect dark is offline" and never changes. No error messages, no nothing. I downloaded the update linked in the first post, still have the same problem.

Killian have you tried to change the port? Were your nods up to date? You know that perfect dark won't run on low connections?

Not sure if anyone has noticed this.
To change the font size or color, edit visual.txt under mutagen folder.
The default font size for searched items is 12.
Changing it to 15 would make reading a whole lot easier.

Tried changing the port, no dice. Nodes were newly copied from the site you gave, so I think they were as up to date as I can make them. I'm now in a dorm room meaning that I have an awesome connection, although that could also mean they block whatever ports I'm trying.

Gonna try some more ports and see if they are just blocked and I'm getting unlucky.

Edit: Trying ports did it, now I'm on. Unfortunately I got that Unity message pop up that I used to get when it wouldn't download anything, hopefully this reinstall has fixed that problem. Thanks for the hlep.

Hello. Just tried PD today and it seems good. The thing is that I keep getting the same message about the unity size whenever I start PD. I read above that I should add some sharing files. How is this done? Any help appreciated.

Nope. It's all about windows api. Sending messages such as WM_GETTEXT and WM_SETTEXT which works fine for standard buttons and texts which uses windows renderer (ie. text is not written as image, which is done for menu. Windows limits some messages to used from program itself. This is why main window can't be fully translated.

It is possible with dll injection, allowing you to send messages from inside program. Unfortunately, my C++ skills aren't high enough (injecting dll is not possible from programs coded with "managed" languages.

Besides having the same problem like several others (0% downloads for several weeks now, unity being 18 MB only yet), I'm also not able to add files for upload. If I try, I get the following error message:

Furthermore I wonder what exactly the option "encryption" in the upload window is about?

If anyone of you could help me I'd be really grateful. Many thanks in advance!

Perfect dark has a rather limited amount of stuff in it from what I tried until now. And the amount of things going in the cache is huge (it keeps pushing unwanted stuff to my hdd with 100k/s).
What would be really helpful is if someone translated some more of those things in the main window. As it is now, I can't understand at all what are the chances of actually downloading a certain file. In Share it was much clearer, it was written in yellow, means chances are good, etc. Here I can't figure what files from list are in DB only or on a remote node as well.
For example, what does this thing mean:

And how can I find out at what speed a certain file downloads? I only get the global speed.

thanks

For those trying to dl something, here's a file that works for me right now to try on: (???) InterVideo WinDVD8(HD DVD?Blu-ray???).rar

xns: Every file needs at least 1 keyword

Thank you, just had found this out as well. :-)

So to clearly sum it up for other newbies:

a) setting the "clusters" in the upload window of the tutorial is obligatory - and, as just learned from Niko^, in plain English that's nothing else than keywords

b) once one has actually added some files to upload, this increases the "unity" by the respective size and subsequently also enables downloads

Quote
Translation for some parts of interface not translated by program.

Thank you very much for your translation efforts! Unfortunately, as with your previous version, translator.exe doesn't run here (WinXP). Once started, I get the following error message: "The application could not be initialized correctly (0xc0000135)." You do not have any idea of the reason by chance, do you?

You need .NET runtime from microsoft.

Keywords won't be used as clusters, I think searches is but i'm not 100% sure.

Note that you don't have to upload but you may have to wait until it downloads random parts of files to upload for others.

I have a problem. I am trying to add the nodes, but whenever I insert something like:

...or all of them at once, after clicking the apply (a.k.a. "add" button) the text I enter just disappears. And my Perfect Dark is not connected...

Please help!

Thanks for this tutorial!

Just wanted to say that perfect dark works perfectly in MacOS X 10.5 Leopard on my MacBook with CrossOver Office (no huge and slow emulator needed!), once I changed the default font in mutagen/visual.txt to MS PGothic. The only issues are related to copy/paste and text entry of japanese characters, which just results in question marks - kind of a big problem I guess.

edit:
Oh, and to get mutagen to show up, I had to click the button on the last tab of the settings window.

Hello,
the two previous postings confuse me a little bit,
means this the application include a english gui?
If yes, I had download the version 0.933 form silverados start post, but where is the setting to change the language?

Or this means I still need some external translation app or a modified version?

I'm only guessing from the limited info but this is what I think. When I connected I was given a message that manual download would not start until the unity was at 20GB, or something to that effect. I'm constantly receiving and uploading even though I can't download a file. This means I must be caching other peoples uploads and helping share them. What's in my unity folder could be anything that's currently being shared on the network, plus whatever I choose to upload since it gets cached and put in there too. Once my unity/cache hits 20GB my downloads will start... I think.

It will start to download once your cache reaches 2 GB. You can add own files to speed up this process.

Hello all, I just got Perfect Dark 0.992 a while ago, and I've set everything up with the nodes - but still can't download anything. I get only 1 Kb for send, and 2 KB for receive, with no hits when I type in a keyword (I tried "anime" and "game" so I should be getting lots of hits ^_^)

The error message I get is "Perfect Dark is online, open port NOT confirmed." What do I do about this? I didn't enter an IP when first setting up Perfect Dark (wanted to remain anonymous) - is that the problem? Or is it referring to a port forwarding error?

Please help! Thanks in advance! ^_^

You need only to enter the nodes. Also set your firewall or router to allow perfect dark the access to internet over the setted port.

Hi,

I'm experiencing the "no download, no upload" problem as well, even though PD is online and I'm getting search results. I fired up tcpview and noticed that once I get an "ESTABLISHED" connection, it drops after a few seconds. I also noticed there are 50+ connections in the TIME_WAIT state. I imagine this is not normal. I'm currently investigating what's causing this but so far I did not manage to find a single clue. Could it be that I'm using Windows XP x64? I hope I'll find out soon and I'll report if anything happens.

Hm... I followed everything inside the tutorial in the 1st post but still cannot get it to be ONLINE mode...
Question
1. What's the minimum speed required to get this connected?
2. It seems that the cache have to be at least 40Gb for the 0.992, which means that i need to have space twice as much to the 40Gb to download stuff as big as 40Gb?

Hi,

Looks like Perfect Dark has a broken network stack or something. I tried a couple of tricks on my XP x64 PC but I  never got more than couple of bytes/s. Installing PD on my Win2k box seemed to have solved the problem. I was immediately getting some visible up and downstream (about 32 up and 60 down, for now). I'll try to run the software off peak, in the middle of the night and see what happens.

Hope this is helpful.

OK, here's what I found. Apparently Perfect Dark is suffering from the multiprocessor bug. Running it on a single CPU (by setting the affinity in Task Manager) makes the program work. As soon as I set it back to utilise all processors, all uploads and downloads are killed immediately. It just drops to 0kB/s 0kB/s...

I'm pretty sure this is why certain ppl got the "no download, no upload bug".

Okay, I understand that you have to have 2.0 GB in your unity/cache folder before you can begin downloading.  What I don't understand is what exactly these files going into that folder are, and why you need 2 GB worth of them.  I also don't understand why even though I have a good connection, and my ports are forwarding properly, I'm only downloading these cache files at about 30-40kbps.

You can think of the cache files as a public temporary folder, where everybody uploads something and add their parts to your cache folder. If the uploader is gone the files will still be accessable through the public cache. That's why it's called "Unity" folder, because all peers form a united virtual cache. Only a few people are using perfect dark so far and that's the reason why the unity folder has to be that big. As soon as it gets more popular and the number of caches grow, it's possible that it will be replaced by a smaller unity folder.

Thank you for all of your help.  Perfect Dark is unlike any program I've ever used before, so it's taking some getting used to.  I was able to get it up and running in about half an hour though, whereas I never could get the hang of Share.

Edit: Another question, if anyone knows the answer, what does it mean when a file in your download list becomes highlighted in red?

1.000 adds translation ability. Use write mutagen and you will get language.txt in mutagen folder.
Select "other language" as language.
Then add translation to third line.

id "10"
" information "
" ?? "

would become

id "10"
" information "
" ?? "
" translate here "

Red means that no more pieces is available.

I am still not sure how to share a file...

When I use eMule, I specific one or more folders with files to share,
if someone is interested he can download the files from me.

-How Perfect Dark share files? I guess I must upload it, but where is this file stored? I guess in this 20GB temp file, is this correct?
-When I try to upload a file, PD ask me for keywords, is there somewhere a list of possible keywords? What should/can I enter in this fields? (Solved: Seems to me every Keyword are possible, it's only a tag system for the files, but the tags are not fixe defined)
-When I finished with the upload, I see it in information->log and the file is removed from the upload list, is it correct that the file not appear in "search"? If yes, why? (Solved: Seems to me the "Search" show not all files

-When I finished with a download, can I remove the file or should I leave it in the download folder? (like downloaded files in emule)

-When I look in the search I find some files with a sign, what means sign in this table? What can I do with it? (Solved: Nothing at the moment, but it's possible to search from a special user)
-What is a "gather" ? (Solved: direct downloadlinks are shown there)
-Why the state for a forum is "download"? (SOLVED: This means listen to this feature, OD check for new entires)
-This "floots" are very funny, but what's the sense of it? (Solved: Yes, it's just for fun)

Sorry for all this questions, but I am still very confused.

Peter

EDIT: some questions are solved in the menatime.

Hi, I'm using 1.02 and having some trouble.
It connects just fine (I have a 2mbps DSL line), but:
1) Uploading is extremely slow. The send speed is stuck at around 20 kb\s, when it should be around 150
2) I can't download. Even though it uses the incoming channel almost to the max (150 kb\s of the possible 200), downloads don't progress and unity grow very, very slowly. It seems to be.. uh... downloading something else? Disregard that, downloads took off when Unity reached 100 MB.

in winny and share, having a trigger function for file download  automatically .
We can add files to download by hash, filename pattern  match, id, etc published by someone

does perfectdark has such function too ?

Sooo, for people who get slow downloads with PD.. I needed to set connection type up to 8Mbit/T1 to get decent download speeds, otherwise it used like 1/4 of my bandwith (on 2Mbit line).

perfect dark automatically creates a temp folder with random file pieces called "cache". traffic is in and outgoing since you automatically share the file pieces, that are downloaded to your pc. this is to make the files of other people stay online as long as possible. remember pd was made for HIGH BANDWIDTH users. it's not like emule where you only need 10 KB/s upload in order to be able to download something.

Any tips how to speed up my downloads? PD downloads only a small fraction of the files, stops, resumes, repeats and this goes on for days. The downloading files often get highlighted in red and I have no clue what that means, since the download does resume in time. I would guess it means that there aren’t any users available at the moment with the certain file but that’s only a guess. So far I have not seen the "promised" high speed downloads even though I have 10/10m connection. PD only uses 270 Kbit/s max anyway.

I have tried to set the connection type to T8 but that doesn't really solve the issue. Could it be because I'm from Netherlands and Japan in not really that close to me?

BTW: Thank you for the manual

your maximum bandwidth can only be achieved by proxy servers from your provider. in order to establish an oversea connection this big you would have to move closer to one of the main servers

270 KB/s is lucky, i get sometimes only 20 KB/s. sometimes 400 KB/s. I even downloaded dragonball complete with 40 KB/s. So YOU haven't even tasted pain, yet!

when I uploaded some files, why I can't find all files when I search for it?

Are the files automatic removed after some time?

I have no clue how the search cluster works. Your files are probably uploaded to the nearest ip. If the guy with your files is not offline and your files unpopular, then you won't find it again

Thx Silverado for all the help explaining the setup of PD, I actually used the program when it was 0.880 and recently tried to install the newest one.  I never had a problem before but now encounter the port forward error :/, All firewalls were disabled, I opened a designated port, and did everything I did from 0.880 to get it working, im really confused as to why this port-forward error is even still coming up :/

There's a problem when I add upload files, it'd create a duplicate cache in unity folder. My HDD need to be doubled or even trippled if I use more than one p2p software.

I thought I'd ask here instead of making a new thread. I need some help. I was downloading Perfect Dark all happy-like when I had a blue screen on my computer. It's not overly unusual, I had an error with my MBR that I hope I've fixed. However, when I loaded up Perfect Dark, I noticed that it had reset my download to zero percent! I'm about to cry if I have to download a 30-gig file that I had at 88.8% start over at 0%...

The file in the unity folder is still there, I can see it, but Perfect Dark isn't reading it. Is there a way to force it rehash that download or something? I don't want to start over... It's done this once before, but it came back and I don't know how...

help?

I copied the nodes and tried changing the port to 25975 too, but it till gives me the same thing... help ?

Had the same problem...
...
...and it could be two things:
1°) Your firewall isn't appropriately customized to make allowances for traffic between PerfectDark.exe and the Internet. Configure your AV/FW to trust PD and whatever connection it might make with the world beyond.
2°) Your modem/router wasn't tweaked for port forwarding - especially port 25975 in your case. Go to http://192.168.1.1 (your router's config interface, unless you chose a different address), go to the PF tab/section and configure it to forward traffic on port 25975 (TCP/UDP) for your computer's IP.

It also took me quite a while to get PD to connect properly and the trick was to balance the two points above. Get the router properly poised to promote PF and make sure your AV is set to the correct policy mode (notice: it can be tricky depending on which AV/standalone FW/AIO security suite you're using -- in my case I'm using "customized", which prioritizes the preferences/choices I've outlined...otherwise it'll just default to "untrusted app, automatically forbid traffic") and has PerfectDark recognized as a perfectly safe application, complete with the right network privileges.

Keep tweaking both sides, with different settings combinations until you get PD to display a green "PerfectDark" is online - that's how it went for me... I still had to find a mop to collect all the bloody tears I had shed until the holy instant of revelation, though.

I've just completed a week of fiddling with PD (Unity is over 20-21 gigs now) and...
- Compared to Share, I seem to be waiting a bit longer, though this is variable...I'm certain it has to do with long wait queues due to more people switching to PD.
- I love the file rating system. Goodbye ubiquitous fakes from Share! Hello quality and authenticity! I won't spare a second thought for the vermin who keep reviewing certain files "copyright infringement" and voting them down, thus lowering the trust index.
- It has a lot of files from Share, but it also seems to lack some...which is both a curse and a blessing at the same time.
- I loathe the fact that PD is downloading in the background while I'm waiting for my turn to DL. I don't have unlimited bandwidth (telecom costs are higher here in Europe due to smaller market concurrence) and this can be a problem for me. I understand the necessity of building up a unity folder and sharing the contents to earn the download privilege, but this can be quite irritating if you've got a daily quota to observe.

I've got a question, though: what is the difference between "partial download" and "download" (it sounds self-explanatory, but one never knows) and what are the perks and downsides of this DL mode?

And a second one: I entered "一般コミック" as keyword to filter the PD file list somewhat (leaving me to add sub-keywords for more specific queries), but the resulting list seems to be capped at 1,000. Is there a way to blow this roof to smithereens or am I sentenced to make do with it?

To answer one of your questions, yes, the results are capped at 1000 and there's no way around that. You just need to reduce it again with another search key. I haven't had this problem beyond my initial search term even with the most popular of topics. And I, too, would like to know the difference/purpose of "partial download". I was hoping there would be some kind of option to preview a file before downloading it like some other p2p programs offer.

And finally, once I got nodes my perfect dark connected fine on it's own and I've downloaded a lot already, but it goes at such a slow pace. I wonder if there's anything I can do about it (by way of ports, perhaps, since I didn't modify mine and I am completely oblivious to how ports work), or if that's just the way it rolls?

This isn't working for me, I keep getting perfect dark is offline.
I've allowed it to go through the firewall mulitiple times now, have started from scratch & I still don't know what's wrong.
The unity cache download doesn't appear.
