Stating your reak opinion's about someone's work  can lead them to be discouraged but there are some that takes this as challenge. Well in my case I somehow want peoples to state their real opinion about my work so that I can find my faults and errors.

There is a balance in giving your opinion of someone else's  work. You can't just say everything is just fine and dandy when it's not or they will never improve, but bash their head in before they are secured in their ability and you can stop them from trying ever again. It's all about showing them faults they can improve and encouraging them by what they have and could achieve.

insulting someones work is cruel no matter how bad it is, positive criticism can lead to them improving instead of quitting.

This isn't an opinion thread, though.  This is a rules thread.  And it was in reaction to a certain amount of trolling that was happening over six months ago.

My my indeed!

I would certainly say it depends on the situation. If the OP is an arrogant bastard himself, why be friendly?

Given the situation that I live in an artist' world, which is quite fun, you will see quite a lot of arrogant artists out there who think their work is the blingbling of the rest.

With an arrogant attitude, I of course mean:
OP: "please give me positive crits"
Me: "I don't really like your hands. Perhaps you could try this tutorial?"
OP: "THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH MY HANDS."

So if you would say; "Sorry, your work sucks," wouldn't that be appropriate then?

Of course, there is no reason to say: "this drawing sucks," when the OP truly doesn't deserve it, but I personally believe one should just suck it up, as long as the person says why his/her work sucks.

But, then again, this is my opinion...

I don't see 'You suck' and 'Cut off your hands' as critique at all. I see them as baits to create a fight.

there is certain distance between critique and "you suck"
and in your case, my dear, calling someone a "talentless faggot" is not really productive critique, dont you think?

Meh, why do you make a drama out of every little incident?  :hahaha:

It seems jCafe oldies are good in bashing noobs but become all teary and whiny when they receive a little butthurt.  :punch:

I think you're missing the point of what context the bashing takes place in. This is an artworks section for chrissakes where the intent of posting an artwork is to share and receive constructive criticism primarily. Elsewhere, the oldies can give and take a good thrashing if u wanna spam. 'U suck' comments are common and all, but there're other places for it. The point is just that it's not supposed to be here.

I don't feel that this topic is making a mountain out of a molehill in other words.

Ritualistic hazing (which is made in JEST I might add) is NOT the same as deliberately trolling an artwork thread.  If a n00b posts an artwork thread, I do NOT bash it no matter what you believe.  I do not post a "you suck/go die" kind of reaction.  If anything I comment on my favorite picture, what I like about it, maybe ways they could improve if I see any.

It's called RESPECT.

YES.  So many people put R & R and other such stuff but they don't really mean it.  This is just as bad.

Id second this

I can understand that some people are good artists themselves, they have a moral right to bash someone, because they are good

but fortunately, good artists dont bash the noobs like me, they encourage us

Bashing Others' Works
« Reply #1 on: April 25, 2009, 12:28:59 AM »
As of late, a lot of out and out bashing has been happening in the artwork threads and I will repeat this: this is something I cannot tolerate.  I don't care if you're an old member, a new member, or a pink polka-dotted hippo, do not bash others' artworks.

They have every right to post here; especially if they're looking for feedback or tips on how to get better.  We are a community and I'd like to support each and every member here.  I don't care how shittastic a work is, I find something to build on in it.

There is a difference between constructive criticism and a "you suck."  I'd write more on this but I'm running out of time today.  Instead, feel free to use this thread to discuss anything relating to this issue.

Red's already suggested this (from ST):
Sorry, please read the forum rules to see why you can't view spoilers and why you can't post in this forum section. Thank you!
