One piece is the best.
Naruto, Hajime no ippo, History of Strongest Disciple Kenichi, Bleach, Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Toriko are what I read weekly. I'm not sure if you like them but you should give a try.

I would second Witch Craft Works, Rosario to Vampire, or Claymore.

I enjoyed Rosario to Vampire as a bit of light reading. Claymore was more serious and, while I felt it dragged in places, I've enjoyed most of what I've read.

Witch Craft Works is one of the few I've read that I have actually had a hard time remembering to have patience while waiting on the next chapter.  Though I couldn't pin down what exactly made it stand out so much for me WCW just peaked my interest more than most others I've read which is admittedly not too many.

Hunter X hunter
Nausicaä ( one of my all time favorite )
Vagabond
Dorohedoro ( well almost all you wanted exept the mechs part)
Angel densetsu ( funny one )

Well there is many other good manga but that is the first five who came out of my mind.

dan148, I don't now if you're still searching but here you go :

If you're looking for a manga with a link like games/reality, I would recommend DREAMLAND. Not for the art but for the originality. I thinks it's worth reading.

I don't have others in mind right now but if I remember one, I'll pm you.

ps : it's my first post but I will make my introduction soon so please be patient.

I recommend novel 'GUIN SAGA'  グイン・サーガ
   It's the best novel I think .
        but it's have 2 problem.

   1st it's unfinished because of author's death

   2nd is language
I'm japanese and I can read English .
I enjoy scanlation of manga but I can't enjoy scanlation of novel .
I think scanlated novels are poor.
Is it ATLAS's problem? or my English skill's ?

This is my first post ,  thank you for reading.

If you can understand Japanese then Bakemonogatari, Arakawa under bridge are funny and witty.

Also I would recommend 5cm/sec by Makoto Shinkai; kinda depressing but great artwork and challenges many people's view of what anime is all about.
(Millenium actress is also good for that)

I just read all available volumes a few weeks ago. Pretty interesting story and I also believe he's one of the top members of Tripeace. I think they mentioned no one knew the top 3 members. He may have been one of them and then got either tired or betrayed...

Like the others have said, genre makes all the difference. Otherwise I guess you can go with the well known one like:

Mahou Sensei Negima
History's Strongest Disciple

Maybe not so well known:

The Breaker
Tower of God
Baby Steps
Black Cat
Ubel Blatt
Kekkaishi
Kami no Mizo Shiru Sekai
Akame ga Kiru!
Claymore
Franken Fran
Ga-rei
Hekikai no AiON
KissxSis
Nana to Kaoru
Rosario to Vampire
Taboo-Tattoo
Shingeki no Kyojin
Shinigamisama ni Saigo no Onegai o
Witch Craft Works
Cross Game

Those are some of the ones I've read or I'm currently reading (that I can somewhat remember)

I'd recommend Cowboy Bebop for sheer coolness. It's not a great story-based anime but the characters and music make it great.
I agree with School Rumble, it had me in stitches so many times. Comedy anime is great, so if you like an anime that doesn't take itself too seriously, go for Samurai Champloo. If you like GTO, there is an earlier story of it called Young GTO! Where Onizuka is like 15. There are 5 OVA's of it out, but it's a bit hard to find.
And if you want very story-driven anime, Code Geass and or/Death Note are both great series.
I personally prefer manga, because it's easier to get and there's so much of it out there.

I don't know if there is a thread on this already, and there are too many to go through, so this is one that I will be starting. Am I the only one who loves a good tournament themed anime/manga? I love the battles for the top position and the buffoonery that accompanies each story, last night I watched all 26 episodes of Gigantic Formula and it was awesome, but not a real tournament as far as I'm concerned:maikka:. How about you all, what tournament themed anime/manga do you enjoy?

most of these are probably very well known by most people here but just in case:

REAL: A very compelling drama manga by Takehiko Inoue centered around wheelchair basketball. Convincing characters with touching stories.

Blame!: Sci-fi action manga with next to no dialogue. Extremely captivating.

Mushishi: The most atmospheric manga I've read besides Blame!. It's basically a collection of loosely related short stories about a Ginko, a traveler who helps people having problems with micro-organisms with strange abilities called mushi in a setting that resembles medieval Japan.

One Piece: A simple yet fun story in which the author demonstrates great imagination and attention to detail. Surprisingly touching at times.

Aria: This slice-of-life manga can't be explained in words, it must be experienced.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Alongside Tezuka's Phoenix the most worthy manga being called an epic in my opinion. An action/adventure genre manga about the adventures of members of Joestar family which spans generations.

Phoenix: Tezuka's greatest work. A bit aged at times, but it's definitely worth reading. Sadly it was not finished.

Best way to know is by telling us your favorite genre, but
One Piece is my favorite because it combines hilariousness with some awesome battle scenes
Same for Gintama, it focuses a lot on the comedy, but a couple of the fights aren't bad. There's comedy infused throughout the whole series though
DBZ is a classic
Alive-the final evolution is good for fights but also is pretty dark
The World God only knows is a great Romance/Comedy manga
Read Bakuman for insight into a mangaka's life
Detective Conan for mystery
And Lolita Complex Phoenix is pretty damn funny

Since no one else has mentioned them yet, may I suggest Cat Soup?  There are two animated adaptations, Movie and TV series, based on the original manga, which I am not yet familiar with.  The Movie is more tending towards the "psychedlism" you're looking for, whereas the Series is hard to describe in words.

Like everybody else is saying, it all really depends on what genre you like best.
Personally i lean towards supernatural action manga's with a romantic subplot like Shingetsutan Tsukihime and Elfen Lied.
Other wise i can also recommend eyeshield 21, Beelzebub, fairytail, D.Gray-man, witch hunter, Rave, ect..
